Inspired by Camp. Built for Community. Expanded for Everyone.

Our story
From Summer Camp to Year-Round Retreat Destination
In 1983, educator and camp professional John Hall founded Camp Horizons in the heart of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley with a simple but powerful idea: that summer camp should be a place where kids from all backgrounds could grow, connect, and discover their potential. His goal was to create a safe, welcoming, and fun environment where young people could explore nature, try new things, and form lifelong friendships.
What began as a modest summer camp has grown over four decades into a thriving community and a hub for personal development—not just for children, but for people of all ages.
At Camp Horizons "We are many, we are one."

Horizons Meetings & Retreats: A Natural Expansion
Rooted in the success of Camp Horizons, Horizons Meetings & Retreats was a natural extension of John’s mission: to bring people together in inspiring spaces. Built on the same beautiful 300-acre property near Harrisonburg, Virginia, the retreat center now hosts corporate groups, athletic teams, school programs, and special events year-round.

Spaces for all types of groups
John’s vision has since expanded beyond the original campgrounds to include:
-
Horizons at Hemlock Overlook: A scenic retreat and team-building center nestled in Northern Virginia, offering outdoor education and leadership development just outside the D.C. metro area.
-
Horizons Edge Sports Campus: A state-of-the-art facility focused on tournaments, athletic training, and team retreats—merging sports with hospitality and recreation in a dynamic environment.
Across all locations, the spirit of Camp Horizons lives on: connection, challenge, community—and plenty of fun.
